Roomba iRobot auto vacuum cleaner is awesome

This thing is so awesome, we’ve even bought a second one.

I know you’re thinking that we’re nut jobs. But we’ve decided we don’t care. Our floors are the cleanest they’ve been since the day we moved in!

This all started last month when we got to trial a Samsung version for a couple of days. Except it cost $1k and well, we weren’t going to pay THAT much. The Roomba iRobot (though in newer models than ours) goes for $599-$799 here in Australia, but we bought a refurb from the US that ended up costing just $350 including delivery and for a converter for the Aussie power point (which we got from Jaycar).

This machine has quite honestly changed our lives. Suddenly vacuuming isn’t always in the “shoulda-woulda-coulda” category. We have them programmed to operate at particular times during the day and it’s so nice to come home from a day in the office to find the floors clean.

Granted, it can’t get into every nook and cranny (and can’t do stairs or the couch), but we still get our barrel vacuum cleaner out for those jobs.

And best of all? Suddenly vacuuming has taken a male-orientated lead in the house. Because it’s a techy gadget, Dan knows how to program it, clean it, understand what it’s varying error codes are (5 = halp! I think I’ve sucked up a cat toy!).

Oh, and there’s a version that can mop the floors, too.

We love ours so much, we’ve even named them: Rosie (named after the cleaning robot from The Jetsons) and R2 (i.e. Roomba2, or Rosie2, and a nod to R2D2). Next, I want to personalise them with stickers or something.

Check out these videos I got of Rosie and R2 in action:

Here, I popped R2 on the dining table so you could get a decent look (warning: it’s over 5 minutes long) and see how it doesn’t fall of the edge:

And here’s what it collects within a couple of rounds of cleaning:

The dust catcher is the clincher for me:

Oh! And the best part is watching it go home to charge, it sounds so happy when it gets there:

Now all we have to do is teach the kittehs to ride them:

Who is Rah

Oh hai! I'm Laura, but my friends call me Rah. When I'm not writing for That's Noice I'm writing for Smarter Admins. I love eating pink cupcakes. When I grow up, I want to be just like Karen Walker.

I’m trying to convince Jarod we need one. I’ll find a way to work it into our budget ;)

WASHES THE FLOOR – are you for real! You mean, no more waiting until there’s not 17,000 people in my house?!?!?

    Yayness!

I love ours, have to admit I’ve spent a fair bit of time just watching it do its thing. I would get the mopping one but given it doesn’t have scheduling, I think that’s entering another realm of laziness.

Rah, we’ve been Robot vacuum converts for a while now. Sadly neither of the cats show any interest in training to become drivers. Probably a good thing in Rosie’s case – she is a wee bit on the chunky side. ;)

Funny about the Robot party concept – took it with me to dinner at a friend’s place. They have two dogs and now they have a Roomba. Wonder if I can get a sales commission? LOL

Awesome. I had always thought that the robotic vacuum cleaners were a bit of a waste of time. The cat video is too cute. :)
