Ikea Tempe Opening November 2011
You may have heard the news in the last week or so that apparently the gigantic Ikea store in Rhodes isn’t enough for us Sydney-siders.
Ikea has plans to open an Ikea store in Tempe in Sydney Inner-West/South in November 2011. And I cannot tell you how excited I am!
Try to comprehend the size of the new store with these tidbits of info:
- Tempe Ikea will the largest Ikea store in the southern hemisphere and will create about 550 construction jobs and 600 ongoing jobs
- The store will be 37,000 square metres (about 20 footy fields) and will have 2,000 parking spots
- The main path of the store will be 2.5km long (OH MY GOD)
I heard somewhere (but can’t find a source to support it) that this store is going to display every item in the catalogue. But I thought they already did! Crazy.
I’m already imagining the drive down the Princes Highway to downtown Tempe to get me a trolleyfull of flat-packed goodness.
I have 2 rules about Ikea shopping, though:
- Get there in the first 2 hours of opening if going on a weekend. There’s nothing worse than trying to make your way through the store with half of Sydney and their snotty children (sorry parents, I speak as a childless person)
- Start in the as-is section near the checkouts. Half our house has been furnished with seconds from the as-is section at Rhodes and the former Blacktown store. Half-price furniture that’s a bit banged up? Yes please!
Bring on November!

The best news I’ve heard in AGES. I only live down the road from Tempe, and I’ve been cranky ever since they closed down the Moore Park store because Rhodes is a pain in the butt to get to. Bring on 2011!
Did anyone’s Mum ever say “Your room looks like Tempe Tip”? I didn’t even know there was actually a tip at Tempe until the IKEA talk started LOL
My mum never did… but a) she was messier than me b) we lived in the bush ;)
I grew up in Kogarah, and we used to visit Tempe tip before the Rockdale garbage centre opened.
I can’t believe Ikea are building there, it’s literally 5 minutes from my place! WOOT!
GoaldeeBug’s last blog post..Graduation
you’ll have to make a trip back from the US to visit it when it opens ;)
Ikea *rawks*!
I’ve got my million-plus LEGO parts collection stored in a whole pile of TROFAST storage units. When my wife first met me, she thought my LEGO room was actually a shrine to Ikea, lol… :-P
If you look at the various Ikea sites for different countries, you can see that some markets get more choice in colours/finishes for products available in Oz (e.g. Search for a FREDRIK desk on the German Ikea site), and there are some products that we just don’t have over here in Oz at all.
The one product that I know we’ll (probably) never see in Oz are the Ikea flat-pack houses….
